Am I the only one who thinks the obsession with light roasts is a bit much?

Last week at the Portland Coffee Fest, my friend Jake kept raving about this single-origin Ethiopian light roast, calling it 'complex' and 'bright'. I tried it and honestly, it just tasted sour and thin to me, like undercooked beans. Three years ago, I switched to a good medium-dark roast from a local roaster in Seattle and my morning cup has been consistently satisfying ever since. Anyone else feel like the push for super light roasts is just a trend that ignores a good, balanced flavor?

Sounds like your friend's into bean juice that tastes like battery acid.

That part about people being scared of anything that just tastes good... it's so true. It feels like a contest now, where the goal is to taste the weirdest note possible instead of enjoying your drink. I miss when coffee was just a warm, comforting thing, not a sour puzzle you have to solve.

You saying it tasted like undercooked beans is exactly right. I see this everywhere now, not just coffee. It's like people are scared of anything that just tastes good and satisfying. They chase these extreme, fancy versions of simple things and call anything normal boring. A balanced cup shouldn't be a hot take.
