I refused to weigh my coffee beans for 3 years, and a $12 scale just made me eat my words
For the longest time I was that guy scooping beans with the plastic scoop that came with my grinder, leveling it off, and calling it good. My pours were all over the place and some mornings the coffee tasted great and other mornings it tasted like wet cardboard, and I blamed the beans, the water, the grinder, everything except me. Then my neighbor Dave handed me his little kitchen scale at his place in Sacramento last month and we brewed the same beans side by side, one scoop and one at 18 grams, and the difference was not even close. The scoop came out to 13 grams on one try and 21 on the next because the beans settle different every time, which I never would have guessed. I always figured weighing was something only the super picky people did for bragging rights, but it turns out it just removes one whole guess from your morning. I've been weighing for 3 weeks now and my bad cups dropped to almost zero even with the same cheap grinder and the same grocery store beans. So what's the one step you guys used to think was overkill but now you won't skip?
