I used to think single origin coffee was just a fancy way to charge more
For years, I stuck with my usual dark roast blend from the grocery store. Then my friend in Portland sent me a bag of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, saying it would change my mind. I brewed it in my old drip machine and was shocked by the bright, fruity taste, like blueberries. It made my old coffee taste flat and burnt. Has anyone else had a coffee that totally changed what they thought was possible?

Totally get that. Had a similar moment with a Kenyan coffee that tasted like black currant and lime. It made me realize blends often smooth out those wild, interesting flavors for consistency. Now I hunt for those weird single origins that taste nothing like "normal" coffee.

Honestly, I've reached the point where I get suspicious if my coffee just tastes like coffee. What have I done to myself.
