The $12 kitchen scale that made me ditch my scoops for good

I used to be a scoop guy for espresso, swore by my little plastic measuring spoon even after a barista friend told me it was garbage. Last month I grabbed a cheap digital scale from a Target in Portland on a whim, mostly for a baking project. First time I weighed my beans, 18 grams looked SO different than what I thought 18 grams was, like a full quarter inch less in the basket. That one detail blew my mind because it meant every shot I pulled for three years was probably off by 2 or 3 grams. I ran a side by side, same beans, same grind, one scoop vs weighed, and the taste difference was night and day. The weighed shot came out way sweeter and less bitter, no contest. Now I'm wondering if my grinder's hopper is also lying to me about the dose, has anyone else had that moment where they realized their whole routine was based on a bad measurement?
