Unpopular opinion: the best cup I ever had was at a gas station in Amarillo, and the guy behind the counter taught me more than any roaster has
I pulled into a Shell off I-40 about two years back, and the older fellow working the counter saw my travel mug and asked what roast I was drinking. When I said I usually grab whatever is dark, he said, "Son, you are tasting the burn, not the bean," and then poured me a cup from a small batch he brewed himself in a plain drip pot behind the register. It was a washed Ethiopian he got from a friend in Dallas, and it tasted like blueberries, which I did not know coffee could do, so my question is whether anyone else here had their whole way of thinking flipped by a total stranger instead of a fancy shop.
