Used to eyeball my grind with a $12 blade grinder, now I weigh beans on a $20 kitchen scale from Target
For about three years I just dumped beans into that little blade grinder and hoped for the best, which meant my morning cup at home in Boise tasted different every single day. Last month a barista at a shop on 8th Street let me try her pour over setup and I noticed she weighed everything, so I bought a cheap digital scale and started measuring 18 grams of beans to 300 grams of water. The weird part is my coffee got sweeter without me changing beans at all, just because the grind stopped bouncing around so much. Now I'm curious how many of you weigh your beans versus just scooping, and did the scale actually change the taste for you or was it more of a control thing?
So you're telling me a $20 scale from Target did what three years of blind hope could not, wild how that works lol. I scoop because I'm lazy but I keep telling myself I can taste the difference when I measure, which might just be me feeling smug about it. The sweet thing probably isn't the scale though, it's that your grind stays the same every time so you can actually dial stuff in without chasing a moving target. Next thing you know you'll be weighing your water too and your kitchen counter will look like a science lab on a Tuesday morning.
