Warning: My stubborn skip on coffee desserts ended with a friend's pie
I figured coffee would wreck any sweet dish (too bitter for me). Then my buddy brought over a chocolate coffee pecan pie to a gathering. The coffee just bumped up the chocolate taste in a good way (total surprise). Now I get why people mix coffee into sweets. I've started putting a little coffee in my brownie batter since then.

My aunt's mocha cake recipe was my first clue about coffee in desserts. I avoided it for years thinking it would ruin the sweet flavor. That pie your friend made sounds exactly like what won me over. Adding coffee to brownies is a smart move, it deepens the chocolate without overpowering it.

Disagree with you there @iris_west. Coffee just makes chocolate desserts taste bitter and fake. It ruins the sweet point for me every time.

But have you tried using a really good dark chocolate instead?
