Hot take: I asked 12 neighbors for podcast picks and got way better shows from the 3 who barely listen
Last month I got tired of the same 5 recommendations from my friend group, so I made a list and asked 12 people on my block what they were into. The big fans all pushed the same three hit shows I had already heard of, but the casual folks who said stuff like "I only listen while doing dishes" gave me two small ones that I actually finished. The smaller shows had a host who just talked normal instead of doing a whole radio voice. So now I'm wondering if superfans are the worst people to ask for picks. Who do you trust more for recommendations, the obsessed fan or the person who barely cares? lol
The whole "superfans give bad picks" thing feels a little blown up for what it is. You asked 12 people and got 2 good small shows out of it, that's just how asking people for stuff goes. The obsessed folks are obsessed for a reason, they found stuff they love and want you to love it too, so they push the big names because those worked for them. A person who only listens while doing dishes doesn't care enough to have a whole identity around it, so they just say whatever random thing made them laugh once. Those two little shows might be great or might be junk you happened to like because you were in a good mood that day. Asking 12 neighbors for podcast tips isn't a science project, just take the wins and move on.
