Serious question, how do you decide which local recs are actually worth trusting?
I used to think the best way to find good local spots was just to ask whoever seemed friendly. Last month I wasted $60 on a "hidden gem" diner in Fresno that three different people swore by, and the pancakes were cold and the coffee was basically brown water. That tipped me off that maybe personal recommendations from acquaintances are not as reliable as I assumed. Now I look for people who have actually lived in the area for a long time and have specific reasons for liking a place, not just a general "oh it's great." I also started checking if the person recommending has similar tastes to mine. It sounds simple but I never really did that before. Has anyone else had a string of bad recs and figured out a better way to filter them?
