TIL the best community rec I ever got came from a guy who hated the thing he recommended
Our neighborhood board pushed a big list of "top 10 local spots" in the spring newsletter, and I tried 6 of them over one weekend in April. The bakery line was 40 minutes for a dry croissant, and the "hidden" trail they listed had 30 cars in the lot by 9am. But the one rec that actually worked came from my neighbor Dave, who spent 10 minutes complaining about the new hardware store on 5th before admitting he goes there twice a week. It made me think we should ask people what annoys them about a place, not just what they like. How do you all get honest recs out of folks who only ever say nice things?
