Debate: Should we actually clean thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol or not?

I always used 90% isopropyl to clean CPUs until a senior tech told me the alcohol can seep under the IHS and ruin the chip. He said just use a dry microfiber cloth and be careful. Now I'm torn, cause the alcohol method works way better for me. Anyone have a hard and fast rule on this?

Oh wow, that's actually a really good point! I think a lot of us just assume people saw something with their own eyes when it's probably third-hand info. He might've just heard it from a friend of a friend who was there, you know? That kind of stuff gets twisted so fast, it's hard to know what's real anymore. Do you ever try to track down the original source when stories like this pop up?
