Driver updates caused more crashes than the malware I was removing

I had a client in Sacramento bring in a laptop with a nasty popup scam running. I wiped the malware and updated the video driver to the newest version from the manufacturer's site. Next day the screen went black and the system would blue screen every boot. Rolled back to the previous driver and it's been stable for a week now. Does anyone else stick with older drivers unless there is a specific fix you need? I'm starting to think newest isn't always best for reliability.
