Found a thermal paste trick that saved me 3 rebuilds this month

I work on gaming PCs in a small shop near Portland. Kept having issues with Ryzen 7000 chips running hot even with good coolers. After 3 tries with different pastes I started spreading it thin with a credit card instead of the pea method. Dropped temps by 8 degrees on average. Anyone else find a weird method that just works better than the usual way?

The credit card method works because you get full coverage without air pockets. I started doing that after watching a guy who repairs server racks for a living swear by it. Been doing it that way ever since, never had an issue.

@maxp68 I've actually been doing the opposite - spreading paste with a putty knife and then pressing the credit card over it. The knife gets better pressure than the card alone and you still get that smooth finish. Never thought about it until a buddy who builds custom PCs showed me that trick.
