Had a laptop in the shop yesterday that kept shutting off after 10 minutes, turned out to be a bad thermal sensor on the board.

Classic thermal sensor failure. I spent a whole weekend once chasing a similar ghost, only to find out I'd forgotten to plug the fan back in after a simple cleaning. Felt like a real genius that Monday.

But honestly, how often is it really the sensor itself? Could be a dozen other things making it act up. I've seen bad paste or a warped heatsink give the same exact symptom. Makes me think of @seanperry's fan story, where the fix was way simpler than a board level part. I'd double check all the basic cooling stuff before calling it a bad sensor.

Troy's dead on, I've done the exact same thing before chasing a sensor ghost that was just a loose connection.
