I chose refurbished Lenovo over a brand new Dell for my shop workstation
Everyone at my shop thought I was crazy for buying a $300 refurbished ThinkPad instead of a new $800 Dell. I needed something for light data recovery and diagnostics, not gaming or rendering. Six months in and the ThinkPad has been bulletproof, plus I saved enough to buy a decent monitor and a few extra drives. The Dell fans I know kept saying the warranty alone was worth the extra cash, but my refurb came with a 90 day warranty and I haven't needed it. Has anyone else had good luck with refurbished business machines for basic bench work?

eBay seller warranty is a gamble, stick with reputable refurb resellers instead.

You're right that the price difference is huge, but I gotta push back a little on the warranty thing lol. I bought a refurb Lenovo off eBay once and the motherboard crapped out on day 95. That 90 day warranty was basically worthless because the seller ghosted me and Lenovo wouldn't touch it. Had to eat the whole cost plus shipping back to the seller who never responded. Meanwhile my buddy's new Dell had a fan die after a year and they shipped him a replacement next day no questions asked. For a shop workstation where downtime actually costs you money, that peace of mind matters more than saving 500 bucks upfront. Different use cases I guess but I learned my lesson the hard way.
