My neighbor asked me to fix his kid's laptop and said 'just tell me what to buy'

I was helping him with a dead hard drive, and he got real quiet when I explained it wasn't a part you just swap like a battery. He said 'So you're saying I can't just throw money at this to make it simple?' Tbh, it made me think about how we explain problems to people who don't get tech. How do you break down a complex repair without making someone feel dumb?
