My thermal paste anxiety is real, folks.
Yesterday, I was swapping out a CPU cooler and got stuck for like ten minutes just staring at the paste tube. I know, I know, everyone says the method isn't a big deal, but my brain keeps jumping to what if it's not even or causes overheating. How do you guys handle this, or am I just making a mountain out of a molehill?

Honestly you're overthinking it to a crazy degree. I've built so many PCs and just smeared the paste on with my finger before, never had a single heat issue. Modern paste is forgiving and the pressure from the cooler mount spreads it out anyway. People get way too hung up on perfect patterns when the actual goal is just filling microscopic gaps. Stressing for ten minutes is way worse for your health than any paste method could be for your CPU.

But what about thicker pastes, like the ones that come with some coolers? I tried spreading one with my finger once and it went all lumpy, had to wipe it off and start over. Doesn't that stuff need the pressure from mounting to spread right, or are you just talking about the more liquidy kinds?
