Rant: That server crash in the middle of a client presentation downtown

I was at a small law firm in Austin last Wednesday running a new file server migration when the whole network just dropped mid-demo. Turned out the backup power supply had been squealing for weeks and nobody told me, fried the RAID controller when it finally gave out. Has anyone else had clients just ignore warning signs until things totally break?

Has anyone ever stopped to think that maybe clients actually get some weird satisfaction out of watching stuff break? Like they almost want the disaster to happen so they can finally have a good story to tell at happy hour.

Had the exact same thing happen last fall with a dental clinic in Phoenix. Their server UPS had been beeping like crazy for two months but the office manager just turned the sound off instead of calling us. Lost their entire database when the power flickered during a thunderstorm. The worst part is they expected us to magically have a backup ready even though they said our monitoring fees were too expensive six months ago. Does anyone else get blamed for client cost cutting that backfires?
