Showerthought: a guy at the Boise repair meetup said 'heat is 90% of your failures' and my last 6 months of tickets proved him right
Back in March I started keeping a little notebook of every machine that came across my bench, just what the customer said was wrong and what the real problem turned out to be. This older tech named Ray at the Boise repair meetup, first Tuesday of the month over at the library on Cole, told me to quit guessing and just look for heat damage first. Dust clogged fins, dried out paste, swollen caps hiding next to a hot VRM, a fan that spins slow but never quite dies. Out of 41 tickets since April, I count 33 where heat or airflow was the root cause, and 21 of those were machines people swore were just 'slow' or 'needed a reinstall'. The funny part is I used to waste an hour running drive tests before I even cracked the case. Now I pull the side panel, hit it with a cheap IR gun from Harbor Freight, and I know in 30 seconds where to start. So what is your first move on a walk in, do you go heat first or do you still test drives before anything else?
