That $180 data recovery software did nothing for my dead drive

I had a 2TB Seagate fail on me last month while working on a client's backup server in Austin. Paid $180 for some fancy recovery tool that promised to fix bad sectors, but it just spun the drive worse and I lost everything anyway. Ended up sending it to a shop in Round Rock that charged $350 just to look at it, and they said the heads were already gone. Has anyone else gotten burned by these DIY recovery programs, or is there a trick to actually saving a drive that's clicking?
