Vent: A client in Phoenix insisted their old hard drive was fine, but the backup took 14 hours

Last week, I was doing a system check for a regular client. They said the computer was just 'a little slow' and refused a new drive. I started a backup to be safe, and it crawled at under 10 MB/s. The whole process took over 14 hours because of thousands of bad sectors. Now they need data recovery, which will cost way more. Has anyone else had a client fight a simple drive swap only to face a much bigger bill?

Yeah, @charles_lewis14 is right about being thorough. I had a guy argue his clicking drive was just "dusty." The clone failed halfway through, and the recovery quote was more than a whole new setup.

Honestly, 14 hours for a backup is just being thorough.

Had a buddy swear his 12 hour backup was "paranoid" until a lightning strike fried his main drive the next week. Spent three days piecing together scraps from old emails and cloud drafts because that backup drive was sitting in the same damn drawer. Told me he'd pay for a 20 hour one now if it meant not reliving that panic again.
