Watched a tech at a Boise repair shop lose 40 minutes to a single screw, and it changed my whole intake routine
I was picking up a laptop at a shop in Boise last week and watched a guy spend 40 minutes fighting a stripped screw on an old HP because he started pulling the case before checking if it was even worth repairing. He never once looked at the drive health or asked what the customer actually used the machine for, just went straight to opening it. I started doing a 5 minute check first now, SMART data, battery cycles, what they use it for, before anything gets unscrewed. Has anyone else built a pre-teardown checklist like this, and what do you put on yours?
Honestly that "check if it was even worth repairing" part hits home, I once spent an hour on a lawnmower that turned out to be cheaper to just replace. Now I give everything the ol sniff test first, literally, if it smells like burnt money I walk away.
