Dropped $380 on a 6 foot straightedge I barely use, here is what I should have done
Six months back I bought a fancy 6 foot aluminum straightedge because a guy on a job in Fresno told me you cannot screed without one. Spent $380 on it, plus another $60 on the case so it would not get dinged up in the truck. Turns out for the slabs I pour, mostly driveways and small shop floors, a good 10 foot board does the same job and I am not scared to bang it around. That straightedge has been out of the case maybe four times since March, and two of those times was just to show it to a helper. The worst part is I have to baby it, and if it gets a burr on the edge it is basically done for checking flat work. Save your money and buy a spare float and a case of cure instead. Anybody here actually get real use out of a long straightedge or did I just fall for the pitch?
That part about the burr on the edge being the end of it is real. One little nick and now you are checking flat work with a tool that lies to you. Might as well cut it down and use it for forms at that point.
