Had a talk with a retired finisher at the supply yard last week
He told me he never uses a broom finish on driveways anymore because it holds dirt and grime worse than a light swirl. Got me thinking about whether I've been doing residential jobs the hard way for no good reason - any of you guys tried switching it up and regretted it?

Yeah, "holds dirt and grime worse" is exactly what my old man said when I started helping him in the shop. He swore by a light swirl for anything that got rain or sprinklers hitting it regular. I tried a broom finish on my own driveway a few years back just to see what he meant. Big mistake. The dirt built up in those lines and it looked dingy inside of six months. I ended up scrubbing it with a pressure washer and a stiff brush way more often than I wanted to. So yeah, I switched back to a light swirl on all my jobs and nobody has complained yet. The broom finish is good for grip on slopes but for a flat driveway it's just extra work keeping it clean.

My last swirl job looked like a Jackson Pollock painting. Oops.
