I think everyone's over-sanding their concrete overlays

Was at a job site in Phoenix last week where a guy spent 4 hours sanding a 300 sq ft overlay smooth as glass. But my old boss taught me you want some tooth left for the sealer to bite into. Over-sanding makes it look nice for a day but then the sealer peels in 3 months. Has anyone else seen this happen on their projects?

The sealer peel is the worst. Took me a while to realize smooth as glass just means no grip for the sealer to stick to. Saw a deck we did two years back where the homeowner insisted on buffing it to a mirror finish. Came back last spring and it was flaking off in sheets. Had to grind the whole thing back down and start fresh. The old guys were right, a 120 grit paper is plenty rough enough for a good bond.

Nah. Smooth finish seals fine if you use the right bonding primer first.
