PSA: the $85 magnesium float I grumbled about buying paid for itself on one driveway pour
Two months back I was doing a 30 by 40 driveway in Boise and my old wood float was leaving little ridges on the surface that I had to fight with on every pass. My buddy told me to just spring for a magnesium float instead of fighting it, and I hated spending $85 on what looked like the same tool with a different color. First time I used it on that pour the cream came up smooth and even, and I only had to hit each section once instead of going back over it. The homeowner actually said it looked like glass before we even got the sealer on, which never happens. I used to lose an easy 20 minutes per slab messing with ridges and then chasing them with the trowel, and that time is just gone now. It paid for itself on that one job with the labor I saved, and I've used it on six pours since then. Anyone else got a tool they put off buying way too long because the price felt dumb at the time? I want to hear what else I'm sleeping on before the next pour.

Did you ever read that thing about how the cream is what really fights you, not the aggregate underneath? I heard a guy say the float's job is pushing that paste around even, and a magnesium one just does it without dragging. Sounds like you already found that out the hard way.
