Wasted $400 on a laser screed attachment that barely worked

I picked up one of those aftermarket laser screed add-ons from a guy at a trade show last spring... thought it'd save me time on big slabs. Spent two days trying to get it calibrated on a 30x40 garage floor and it kept bouncing off target. Ended up having to finish the whole pour by hand with my old magnesium floats anyway. Lost about 6 hours of labor plus the cost of the tool, which was a real kick in the pants. The guy who sold it to me stopped answering my calls after the first week. Has anyone else tried those DIY leveling attachments and actually gotten them to work? I'm back to using a straightedge and a good eye now but it stings thinking about that money.

My buddy Mike bought one and it slipped off his bracket on a 50 foot driveway.

Man that sucks... I wonder if the issue was the laser receiver not being designed for outdoor sunlight. Those cheap ones wash out in bright conditions and then they jump all over the place.
