Got told by an old timer that the moon landing theory was a distraction from something else

I was at a diner in rural Wyoming about 3 years ago, and this retired mechanic starts talking about how he thinks the moon landing conspiracy was actually planted by the government to keep people focused on the wrong thing. He said something like 'they want you arguing about flags and shadows while they do the real shady stuff.' At the time I just nodded along, thinking he was another crazy local. But lately, seeing how much energy gets wasted on that one topic while bigger issues slide by, I wonder if he had a point. Has anyone else heard a similar take that kind of stuck with you?

That 'arguing about flags and shadows while they do the real shady stuff' line hit me hard. My uncle said almost the exact same thing back in '08, now I can't unsee it.

And that's exactly the distraction they count on, @johnson.adam, keeping us looking sideways while the real moves happen right under our noses.
