Just hit 500 subscribers on my obscure history podcast and I'm confused
I started this podcast about forgotten train routes in the Pacific Northwest over a year ago. Posted maybe 30 episodes about stuff like the Oregon Electric Railway and the old Milwaukee Road line. Never promoted it anywhere except a few Facebook groups for rail fans. Checked my stats last Tuesday and somehow I had 512 subscribers. That seems like way too many for such a niche topic. I think maybe some bot network picked me up or something because the download numbers dont match. Has anyone else seen weird subscriber counts that felt off like this?

I see it a little different. Five hundred subscribers for a show about niche railroad history might seem high, but it's not that crazy. Those old lines have a dedicated following of rail enthusiasts, local historians, and people who rode them back in the day. The fact that you found a few Facebook groups to share in means the right ears heard about you. Those communities are small but they share everything. Word spreads fast when someone finds a podcast that actually covers a topic they care about.
Also, download numbers usually lag behind subscriber counts. People subscribe thinking they'll listen later, or they save episodes for a long drive. Your stats might catch up once more folks hit play. Give it a few weeks to balance out. And if those numbers are real, that means you are doing something right. Those listeners found you for a reason.

Exactly. @riverwhite hit on something I've seen firsthand. I had a buddy who did a podcast about old streetcar lines in his city, and he got around 400 subs in a month just by posting in a few transit forums and a historical society Facebook group. Those niche communities are tight knit, they share everything. The download lag is real too. I remember his first episode had like 100 downloads after a week, but the next month it jumped to almost 300 once people actually had time to listen on a commute or road trip. So yeah, those numbers sound legit to me. Keep at it.
