Lost $80 on a 'rare' coin off eBay that was clearly fake

I bought this 1916-D Mercury dime from a seller with good ratings, paid $80 thinking I got a deal. Turns out it was a cast counterfeit, the details were all mushy and the weight was off by 0.3 grams. The seller ghosted me when I asked for a refund, and eBay basically said tough luck since it was outside their 30 day window. Has anyone else gotten burned on fake coins from online auctions? How do you spot them before buying?

Wait, they ghosted you over $80? That's wild. Any seller with a clue knows fakes like that get caught fast.

Nah, I kinda get it though. Some sellers just want zero risk and $80 isn't worth the headache if they think you might narc on them or something. Not saying it's right, but I've seen people get spooked over way less.
