My power went out for 12 hours and I realized how quiet the neighborhood gets
During a storm in Cincinnati, the electricity was gone from 2 PM until 2 AM, and the weirdest part was the complete lack of any drone from the usual cell tower or substation hum. I spent the night actually hearing wind and rain instead of that constant low buzz, which made me wonder if we're just used to a background noise we don't even notice. Has anyone else had a blackout that made them aware of a specific 'grid sound' they can now always hear?

Man, that's so true. We had a long blackout after a bad ice storm and the silence was almost scary. I never noticed the low hum from the fridge and the heat pump until it was totally gone. Now I can't un-hear it, it's like this quiet buzz under everything. It really makes you think about all the noise we just tune out.

Wow, the grid's been gossiping this whole time.

Last year my whole neighborhood found out about a zoning change from a group chat before the official letter. I set up a simple text alert for city council agendas using the town website's calendar feed. It sends a link to my phone the day before any meeting. Now I hear things when they're just a proposal, not after the decision is made. It cut the gossip cycle down from weeks to just a day or two for official stuff.
