Pro tip: I started cross-checking local news with police scanners during a big event last month

There was a protest downtown that got really big, and the news said it was a small crowd. I had my scanner app on and heard way more calls for backup than they reported. So I looked at live streams from people who were actually there, and the crowd was huge. The official story just didn't match up with what I was hearing and seeing. Has anyone else caught a gap like that between the official line and the raw feed?

The LAPD scanner feed during that big 2020 protest was an eye opener. They called in 50 units for a "small group" at 3rd and Broadway, but I saw video of a crowd that stretched three blocks. It's like they were reporting on a completely different city. I guess official spin just means "we're telling you what we want you to know, not what's actually happening.

Scanners don't lie, but the spin sure does.

Found that focusing on the raw data itself cuts through most of the spin.
