That $40 humidity gauge I bought for my basement was a total waste

I picked up a cheap digital hygrometer from a hardware store in Cleveland last month, thought it'd help me keep track of moisture down there. Thing read 70% humidity right out of the box, even when I set it next to a dehumidifier that was pulling out buckets of water daily. I tested it with a salt test after a week and it was off by like 15 points. So now I'm out forty bucks and still have no clue if my basement's actually damp or not. Anyone else find a decent budget gauge that actually works?

Man that salt test is the real eye opener, not the numbers themselves. I did the same thing with a three dollar analog dial from a hardware store in Cleveland, and after the salt test it was pegged at 80% no matter where I put it. The only thing that actually worked for me was cutting a small piece of wood and weighing it every few days to track moisture changes, then comparing it to a known dry piece. It sounds crazy but its free and shows you real trends without any electronics lying to you. You ever try anything that low tech?

$40 to learn that numbers can lie, great deal.
