So I bought one of those 23andMe kits back in January for $89 because my mom had this whole theory that her dad worked for the CIA during the Cold War. The results came back showing 18% Eastern European, which sounds interesting until you realize that's basically everyone in Ohio with a Polish grandma. But then I found out these companies sell your genetic data to pharma companies, and I started wondering if this was all a data mining scheme dressed up as a family history hobby. My sister says who cares, it connected us to a second cousin in Minsk who sends us photos of a guy who might be our great uncle. I say I paid almost a hundred bucks to hand my DNA to a corporation that might be selling it right now. Is this stuff legit or am I just paranoid?
