Hot take: that $2,400 layout software did nothing my free tool couldn't do
I bought a full seat of layout software back in March for my small framing crew here in Knoxville, thinking it would save us time on takeoffs. It took 3 weeks just to get my guys trained on it, and the first job we ran through it, the material list came out 40 boards over what we actually needed. My lead guy pulled up a free browser tool and had the same numbers in 20 minutes flat. I ate the $2,400 plus about 15 hours of lost shop time, and the renewal is coming up in April. If anyone has found software that actually beats the free stuff for small crews, I want to hear it, because right now I feel like I paid for a fancy logo.
