I finally quit hand-digging footings after 18 years, and my back wants a word with 2005 me
For most of my career I dug footing trenches with a spade and a digging bar, just me and whoever I could drag out there. Last spring I rented a mini excavator for a 30x40 garage pad job near Dayton and dug the whole thing in under 3 hours. Same job with the hand tools used to eat a full weekend and leave my hands numb for two days. The rental ran me $280 for the day, which felt steep until I did the math on my own labor. Now I only break out the shovel for tight spots the machine can't reach. Anybody out there still digging by hand on small residential jobs, and is it pride or is there a real reason I'm missing?

Used to figure the machine was cheating myself out of a workout, but my knees and my wallet say otherwise.
