Just realized my laser level was off by a quarter inch on a 40-foot wall

I was working on framing a new warehouse last week and kept getting weird measurements. One of the older guys on the crew walked over and said your laser level is off, check it against a string line. I thought he was crazy since the tool was only 3 months old. But I ran a string line across the whole 40-foot span and sure enough, the laser was dropping about a quarter inch on the far end. Turns out I had dropped it off a ladder a few weeks back and never recalibrated it. Now I check my laser against a known reference every time it takes a hard bump. Has anyone else dealt with a tool that drifted out of spec without obvious damage?
