My GC buddy called out my paper estimating habit

I was having beers with my buddy Mike who runs a commercial crew in Austin. He glanced at my tablet setup and laughed, said I was the only guy still printing out material takeoffs and scribbling on them like it was 2005 lmao. It hit different because he showed me his field crew using some app to tally lumber on site and it synced back to his office in real time. Has anyone made the switch from paper takeoffs to digital and actually saved time or did it just add more screen time?

Digital stuff is great until your battery dies and you're standing there with a dead tablet... paper never runs out of power. Not saying he's wrong but that sync stuff is only as good as the cell signal you got on site.
