Serious question, who else thinks BIM clash detection is a waste of time for small jobs?
Everyone at the local ABC chapter meeting in Columbus keeps pushing clash detection on us like it saves money on every project. I disagree. We ran a full clash study on a 4,200 sq ft tenant buildout last fall and it flagged 67 conflicts, but 60 of them were pipe passing through a web hole that never needed to be modeled that tight anyway. My detailer burned 30 hours on the model and the field crew still hit the same two sprinkler issues they always run into when the ceiling gets framed. What actually saved us was the two hour walk with the plumber and the foreman with a roll of blue tape. The tech looked nice on the screenshots I sent the owner, sure, but the schedule didn't move. For jobs under 10,000 sq ft I just don't see the return, and I'm tired of vendors acting like I'm behind the times for saying it. What size project do you all draw the line at before you bring in clash detection?
