Shoutout to the guy who showed me how to do laser scanning without the stupid tripod
Honestly, I spent like 6 months setting up a Leica RTC360 on a tripod for every single scan. Took me 15 minutes just for each setup. Then this older surveyor on a job near Austin last month just walked up and showed me how to clamp it onto a pole and use the IMU to correct the tilt. I felt like an idiot. Now I'm getting scans done in half the time. Has anyone else found a weird trick like that for speeding up site capture?

That older guy probably saved you 10 hours a month easy. The thing is those fancy tools are designed to be portable and fast but nobody reads the manual and the reps just show you the basic setup. Reminds me of how people buy those expensive camera gimbals but never use the follow mode that actually does all the work for them. It's like sneakers with all this tech but most folks just lace them up and go without adjusting anything. We get stuck in the first way we learn something and assume that's the only way to do it. Some old salt with 30 years of field experience probably figured out that clamping trick by getting annoyed at the tripod one day and just trying something different.

That camera gimbal comparison is spot on, I bought one and used it for months before realizing the follow mode was a game changer. We really do get stuck in that first way we learn something and just grind away without thinking.
