Unpopular opinion: the layout robot on the Des Moines hospital job was worth every penny
Everyone on my crew groaned when the GC brought in a robotic total station for the layout on the Des Moines hospital addition last spring. The old timers said we could chalk lines faster and that the robot was just for show. I watched a kid named Travis run it for two days straight and he set 340 anchor points without a single rework. Our manual crew had 6 busts on the west wing alone, and each one cost us about $800 in rebar and time. The robot did not get tired at hour 9 like the rest of us. I get why guys hate change, but I think most of the pushback is pride, not math. If you ran a layout robot on a big job, did it actually save you money, or did I just get lucky with a good operator?
