Walked through a new apartment complex near Austin and the smart home stuff was totally backwards

I was checking out a friend's new place in Round Rock last week and every unit has this smart thermostat and lock setup that's supposed to save energy. But they wired all the occupancy sensors to the hallway lights instead of the HVAC system, so the AC keeps running in empty bedrooms while the hall light turns off when you're standing still. Am I missing something or did the install crew just not think about how people actually live in these spaces?

Man that's exactly the kind of stuff that drives me crazy. I ended up just putting a cheap motion sensor lamp in my hallway and leaving the smart thermostat alone after it kept turning off the heat while I was watching TV. Sometimes simpler is better with these things.

Did you ever figure out why the thermostat was turning off while you were watching TV? Like was it motion based too or just straight up glitching? I had a similar issue with a "smart" lightbulb that kept turning on at 3am every night, took me two weeks to realize it was synced to some random sunrise alarm I never set up.
