Old webcam chat rooms beat modern video calls for me

I picked a 2004-era webcam chat site over Zoom for a long distance movie night with my buddy in Chicago. We used to hang on sites like Camfrog back in the day, so I figured why not. The lag was brutal, maybe 4 seconds, and the audio crackled like a fire. But we watched a 90 minute film and talked after in a way that felt way more real than a polished call. No mute buttons, no screen share, just two dudes squinting at a blurry 320x240 feed. It took me back to 2006 when we'd stay up past midnight doing the same thing. Anyone else still fire up those old chat rooms, or am I the only one who thinks the janky stuff has more soul?
