A stylist in Dallas laughed at my 3 inch trim request and honestly she was right
I was in a chair at a salon on Elm Street in Dallas back in March and asked for just 3 inches off the ends. She put the scissors down and said "that's not a trim, that's a reset, and your split ends will crawl right back up if you fake it." I argued for a minute but she showed me under the light how the damage went way past where I wanted to cut, so we took 5 inches instead. Six months later my hair actually holds a curl again and I've stopped booking panic trims every 8 weeks. If a client pushes back on going shorter, do you hold your ground or give them what they asked for?
My sister asked for 2 inches off at a salon in Plano last year and the stylist gave her exactly that, no lecture, and she was thrilled with it. People know their own hair and their own budget, and a stylist who overrides a client because she's sure she's right is just a stylist who won't get rebooked. That Dallas story sounds great, but for every happy ending like that there's someone who left in tears over hair they didn't ask to lose.
