Everyone says you need a full balayage certificate to make real money, took me 9 hours to see that is not true
Everyone pushes the 40 hour balayage cert class that costs $1,800, and I finally tried pricing my work without it. Back in March a client with box dye to her mid back sat in my chair and I quoted her $165 instead of the $300 another stylist wanted. It took me 9 hours over two visits to lift her to a level 7 and tone out the brass. I used 20 volume and a point cutting pass at the bowl, no fancy class needed. She tipped 30 bucks and sent me her sister the next week. So why do we keep telling new stylists they need another grand in classes before they can charge real prices?
Man, this hits home! Charging what your work is worth should not depend on some piece of paper. A 9 hour correction on box dye for $165 is wild though, that is like 18 bucks an hour before product costs. The skill is what matters, not the certificate, but you gotta price so you actually make money off all that time.
