Hot take: I used to think sulfate-free shampoo was a gimmick...

I heard a trichologist on a podcast last Tuesday say that sulfates strip the acid mantle in under 30 seconds flat, and that got me thinking about all my clients with dry scalps. She explained how it leaves the cuticle rough and leads to color fade way faster than I realized. Has anyone else switched after hearing something that made you question product basics?

Why would I trust some rando with a fancy title over the literal decades of science that proved sulfates are fine for most people? Sounds like she's just selling fear to get more clients.

I get the frustration with influencer types making everything sound scary, but last time I checked, the FDA and most dermatologists still say SLS and SLES are safe at the levels used in shampoo. The real issue is people with super dry skin or sensitive scalps might want to avoid them. But that's like saying some people can't eat gluten so gluten is bad for everyone. It's a pretty small group actually. Most of us can use sulfates just fine without our hair falling out or getting cancer. Seems like the fear mongering gets more clicks than saying "hey it's probably fine unless you have eczema.
