I was sure those $80 shears I bought in a pinch last month were a waste... they're actually the best I've ever used.

Oh I gotta push back a tiny bit on the $80 thing. @the_sarah I totally get why you'd love a good surprise like that, but $80 is actually the sweet spot for quality shears in my book. I've got a pair of $50 ones that snag on fabric like crazy and another set that were maybe $150 that honestly aren't much better than the $80 ones I picked up at a local shop. The cheap ones under $40 always seem to dull fast or get loose screws, but $80 seems to be where the build quality really kicks in without going overboard. So it's not really a waste if you end up with something that cuts smooth for years.
