Pro tip: I stopped doing free color corrections for clients who go to box dye first

Honestly, I had a client walk in last week with hair that looked like orange straw from a box color she put on a month ago. She wanted me to fix it for free because her friend told her I 'owed it' to her for being a regular. Ngl, three years ago I would have spent 4 hours and $80 in product trying to save it. Now I just give them a firm price quote upfront, around $200 minimum, and let them decide. It saves my time and my sanity. How do you guys handle those 'fix my mess' requests without losing money?

Honestly, I started asking for a picture of the box they used first... saves so much guesswork.

Asking for the box picture first just adds another step. Most people threw that box out weeks ago, so you're starting off by frustrating them. It's better to just ask for a good photo in natural light.

Wait, her friend said you "owed" her a free fix? That's wild. Asking for the box picture like @sandra_taylor does is smart, because some of those colors are impossible.
