Tried an ammonia free lightener as a total switch and got orange roots
Last month I used a new ammonia free lightener on a client who usually goes platinum. I figured it would be gentler on her scalp but the roots lifted to a brassy orange instead of pale yellow. I had to do a second round with my usual bleach to fix it. The whole appointment took almost 4 hours instead of my usual 2.5. Has anyone else had trouble getting enough lift with ammonia free formulas on darker natural hair?

Ngl I think the problem here is technique, not the product. Ammonia free formulas just demand a different approach, you can't treat them like your usual bleach and expect the same results. They need more heat or a longer processing time, and if the natural base is medium brown or darker, you're looking at a slow lift that cuts off way sooner than what you're used to. Your client's hair was probably fine and the lift was actually working as designed for a gentler option, you just didn't give it enough time or warmth to get past that orange stage. Calling it a total failure and doubling up with harsh bleach honestly just proves you didn't work with the formula's strengths.
