Update: I finally tried a scalp scrubber after a client swore by it
For months, I thought those silicone scalp scrubber things were just a gimmick, especially the one my regular in Portland kept pushing. She has fine hair and said it helped her color take better, which sounded like nonsense. I bought a cheap one online for about eight dollars and tried it during a shampoo last Tuesday. Her color really did look more even and vibrant after her appointment. Has anyone else seen a real difference with these, or did I just get lucky?

My salon in Seattle stocks them for all our color clients. They help lift product buildup so the dye can get to the hair shaft evenly. It's not luck, it's just basic chemistry.

My last box dye job looked like a failed science fair project. I had so much dry shampoo caked on, the color just slid right off. It basically highlighted the buildup instead of my hair. I should have done a clarifying wash first, but I was in a rush. Now I get why salons push for that clean base. My bathroom sink turned into a tie dye experiment gone wrong.

Guess my hair color is just bad chemistry then. Nora86 makes a solid point about product buildup blocking dye. My shower drain probably has a PhD in clogged pores.
